It’s been a bit, but it’s time for new update to the very early demo of Exploding Pixels.

First of all: introducing the Game Jolt release, in order to increase the amount of people who may see this project I have decided to release it on Game Jolt, and for the foreseeable future, update both simultaneously.

But now for the substantial updates:

  • Modes
  • New Pattern Types
  • Continued UI updates

Let’s quickly go over UI updates. As development continues, I am constantly reworking the UI to make it feel the best it can be, some of this is under the hood, but some of it is moving things around to make them look better. Notably, the Cursor the could be controlled by the WASD/Arrow Keys as be indefinitely shelved as I have ideas for uses of the mouse that would make the cursor a bit redundant.

Now for new pattern types: patterns can now move. They can move vertically, horizontally, or both and will have this movement denoted by blue arrows surrounding the main image. This addition as added a substantial amount of pattern variations — 17 -> 41.

Finally Modes, previously there was one mode and a modifier of that mode. This being the Shop-Based mode and the possibility of infinitely adding cards each round. These have been more conveniently separated into different modes, labeled Normal and Madness. But now there’s a new third mode: Wave.

Wave is somewhat a mix between the two previous modes. Cards are added at the end of each round for as long as you can survive (like Madness), but will be separated into waves with a max of 5 per wave (Limited like in Normal). Unlike the other modes, you currently do not go to shop, but rather choose a card from the shop inventory to add to the next round. As time goes on your bounty increases but so does the amount of waves you have to complete before seeing a payout.

See how high you can go in this new mode now!

Looking ahead: I want to add more patterns, re-look into how shops work, and more importantly add different items to make each game feel more unique from the last. I’ll try to be quicker in the future with updates as I am still having a lot of fun coming up with new ideas for this little game.

see you in the next one,

deno
